OBJECT! - is an artivist collection of paintings centered around women’s rights. In the works, I search to portray women and girls as they navigate societal influences, everyday sexism, gender-based violence, and prevailing inequalities. Originally conceived as poster paintings from 2014, oil on paper, 38 by 46 cm, they were printed as posters and postcards, clandestinely spread across town in a specific artivist project, left in libraries and museum shops and sent to Women's Organisations and University Departments for Gender Studies around the world. The paintings are now under revision, mounted on canvas and covered with a distressed acrylic sheet.
The project title, OBJECT! is a play with words: women are (still) often objectified, denied agency in the public sphere and have their bodies subjected to the control of patriarchal capitalist social norms. The series attempts to draw attention to the multidimensional nature of women's lives beyond the contracted scope of media representations.
These artworks may sparkle reflection and are a way for me to contribute to the ongoing discourse on women's rights and the quest for a more equitable and just society.
